Excerpt: The Only Question That Matters (WIP) — an invitation

❤️❤️❤️ Happy Valentine’s day, lovelies! ❤️❤️❤️

The first draft of my latest book, The Only Question That Matters, is complete! I thought I’d share another little snippet. I’ve run into a problem: I’m a little bit in love with this Alexei character. I mean, wouldn’t you fall hard for a hot fella with good manners, keen situational awareness and a genuine sense of empathy?

Yes, guys like this do exist — the big question is whether you’re likely to run into one on your next luxury space cruise.

The change room door swings open. I hear chatter on the other side, like ducks or monkeys. A woman strides out, wrapped in a white towel that contrasts her smooth brown skin. Her arms and legs are shapely. Her face would be beautiful if it wasn’t twisted in a scowl. One hand clutches the towel to her chest, the other is balled into a fist as she pushes past us.

Alexei pulls me gently out of her way. She disappears around a corner, leaving us standing inches apart. The door has settled and the chatter barely makes it through from the other side. We’re alone and I think to ask him in the form of a kiss. Will you go to bed with me? It would be so simple. The urge stirs in my belly, stalking, prowling. It wants to reach out through my throat and pull his mouth into mine.

His long hair is dirty blonde. A lock has come loose and falls over his face. It catches in his close cropped beard. I reach up to tuck it away. Will you go to bed with me? my finger asks as it brushes the tiny gold ring in the helix of his ear. I lick my lips. The beast is placated.

His watch beeps. He looks at me, apologetically.

“I should be on my way. I have a call to make.”

“You have work?”

He nods. “A conference call. At least I only need to get dressed from the waist up.”

I laugh. He is confident. He makes little jokes like these and I love them.

“I guess I’ll see you at yoga tonight,” I say.

I wave and turn to go, but he touches my shoulder. I stop. I wait.

“How about we skip yoga?” he says. “Let’s have dinner.”

Dinner. And perhaps other things.

So, now comes the big job of editing. Early feedback indicates I have a lot of work to do. I wouldn’t be surprised if I finish another manuscript before I’m done with this one 😬 though, I suppose that’s not such a bad thing. Stay tuned, darlings.
